New + Old House

This is a house that respects its traditional Victorian traditions and seamlessly maintains its order, as it becomes a modernist interface to the north garden at the rear.

The renovation in North Fitzroy consisted of a period refurbishment of the existing front of the house and the addition of a large open living space to the rear including a new large kitchen and spacious living areas. The north garden was equally considered  as usable space and includes a plunge pool that feels like it enters inside as it comes up beside the dining room

The arrangement acknowledges the simple corridor up the middle of the existing house, but carefully dissolves this into the new area. The incorporation of high level windows,  articulated skylights and large exterior glazed doors resulted in a natural light filled space with direct connections to the pool deck and entertaining area.

The unique L shape pool design creates a strong connection between the open living area and outdoor living space. A simple natural colour palette and timber floors, allow the owners’ art collection to be presented in their new warm and inviting home.

The  passive solar design of this house works well to maximize Winter sun and exclude hot Summer sun. It is enhanced with a simple thermal chimney control.
