Nestled between a row of old terraces sits this recently completed renovation and extension. The smart use of storage and space allows the rich internal palette to be the hero of this house. The materials are emphasised by natural day light entering the house through the use of internal light courts and an arrangement of skylights.

The owners are settling in and getting to know their new abode, more photos on the way.

Gardiner Architects are currently working on the design stages of the new Camp Bambara for the Salvation Army. The original camping facilities were destroyed by the Black Saturday Bushfires of 2009.

The brief requires thoughtful attention to the main role of the camp which is to provide an outdoor experiential learning environment where children, their families and carers can spend time together to reflect on previous experiences and begin to heal and build new and lasting relationships.

Through materiality, the project is sympathetic to the surrounding bushland, while also being constricted by strict bushfire regulations.

Medical students spend long hours at teaching hospitals and they deserved more than the old, drab, introverted facility. We opened it up, made it vibrant and accessible.

On budget, on time, and students and staff love it.

This is a newly completed house which is perched on the edge of the Darebin Creek Parklands, a relatively wild bushy, but inner suburban green wedge. The house is large but very environmentally friendly, with underground earth tube systems, solar hot water, solar energy panels and well insulated thermal mass.

There is a formality at the front that speaks quite humbly to the street of traditional period houses, but loosens in plan and section as it approaches the bush at the back.

This house up on Northcote Hill is very much a family home, it just happens to have the best views in Melbourne – looking over the city, the MCG and way out to the west. It is due for completion in October 2013 and is a project with which the owners, the builders, Constructing Spaces and ourselves are fully engaged.201058 SD 110728Middleton site photos
